Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Second Woman Judge for 2026

The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, recommended Gujarat High Court Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal for appointment as a Supreme Court judge on September 28, 2026. This marks the second time in 2026 that a woman has been proposed for the apex court bench, following Justice V. Mohana’s direct elevation from the Bar in May 2026. Justice Agarwal was recommended first among three names, alongside Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Telangana High Court Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh. The Collegium also recommended 12 additional judges for permanent positions in four High Courts. Justice B.V. Nagarathna, a Collegium member, is in line to become the first woman Chief Justice of India in 2027.
