Supreme Court Declines Separate Probe Into Protest Assaults

The Supreme Court has ruled that a separate suo motu investigation into allegations of sexual assault against women protesters during the July 20 student protests in Delhi is unnecessary. A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant stated that these complaints are already being prioritized by a five-member high-powered inquiry committee (HPEC) headed by retired judge R Subhash Reddy. The court clarified that the HPEC has the authority to appoint nodal officers to facilitate the submission of complaints. This committee was previously established to impartially investigate all allegations of violence stemming from the July 20 protests, including claims of police misconduct and violence against police personnel.
