Supreme Court Denies Relief to TMC on Frozen Bank Accounts
· India · Hindustan Times, Indian Express
The Supreme Court on Thursday declined to intervene in the freezing of four bank accounts belonging to the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC). The bench of Justices MM Sundresh and PB Varale directed the Calcutta High Court to expedite the hearing of the faction's petition. The accounts were frozen by the Enforcement Directorate during a money laundering probe involving cash deposits linked to a personal secretary of lawmaker Abhishek Banerjee. The TMC faction argued that the freeze paralyses its political operations, particularly ahead of upcoming by-elections, while the state government cited serious allegations of financial irregularities.
Why it matters
The decision leaves the TMC without access to these funds for daily operations and upcoming by-election expenses, pending a final resolution from the Calcutta High Court.
