Supreme Court Directs Centre to Form Panel on Pharma Marketing Practices

· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu

The Supreme Court directed the Centre to establish a three-member committee to evaluate suggestions and formulate recommendations preventing pharmaceutical companies from engaging in unethical marketing practices. A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta issued the order on Thursday during a hearing in New Delhi. The Centre had previously informed the apex court on September 8 that it intended to set up the panel to propose a statutory framework. The court scheduled the matter for January 29 to review the compliance affidavit submitted by the Centre. Until the committee submits its report and a final decision is reached, the Uniform Code for Pharmaceutical Marketing Practices, 2024 will remain in force.

Why it matters

The formation of this committee directly impacts pharmaceutical manufacturers operating in India and healthcare consumers by aiming to establish stricter legal boundaries against unethical drug promotion and marketing inducements.
