Supreme Court Expresses Concern Over Universal Citizen Journalism
· India · Times of India, NDTV
The Supreme Court of India stated on Thursday that allowing every citizen to claim journalist status would create widespread problems. A bench comprising CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi made the observation during a hearing on public interest litigations seeking protection for freelance journalists, independent creators, and reel-makers covering public protests. Senior advocate Indira Jaising argued that Delhi Police frequently fail to recognize independent journalists without Press Information Bureau accreditation. Solicitor general Tushar Mehta supported police scrutiny, arguing that digital technology allows individuals to manufacture one-sided or sensational content for social media monetization. The apex court noted that the matter requires a detailed examination of existing legal categories and protections for media professionals.
Why it matters
The Supreme Court's review could establish legal definitions and police protocols differentiating accredited press professionals from independent digital content creators.
