Supreme Court Gives Centre Two Weeks to Review Denial of Permanent Commission to Woman Coast Guard Officer

The Supreme Court directed the Centre to reconsider its denial of a permanent commission to Coast Guard Commandant Priyanka Tyagi within two weeks. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant described Tyagi as an excellent officer and stated that a lack of gender-friendly infrastructure cannot justify humiliating a meritorious officer. Tyagi joined as a short service appointment officer in 2009 and has clocked 17 years of service after the top court permitted her to continue beyond the 14-year stipulation in April 2024. Attorney General R Venkataramani, representing the Centre, told the court that a major policy decision taken last month now permits permanent commission for women officers. The bench questioned why the option was denied previously and rejected technical objections regarding her initial application.
