Supreme Court Notices Centre on DNA ID Scheme for Missing Children

The Supreme Court asked the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights to respond to a petition demanding a national DNA and biometric identification system for missing and rescued children. The bench, headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, issued notices after taking note of the petition filed by Reepak Kansal through advocate‑on‑record Pravir Choudhary. The petition calls for a centralised system with statutory safeguards, mandatory DNA sampling of unidentified rescued children and willing parents, and integration of all child‑protection databases. It also demands creation of task forces and standard operating procedures for tracing, reunification and rehabilitation. No decision has yet been taken on the petition.
