Supreme Court Orders Ayodhya SIT to Expedite Donation Probe

· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu, Indian Express

The Supreme Court instructed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing alleged embezzlement of donations at the Ram temple in Ayodhya to complete its investigation expeditiously and bring it to a logical conclusion. The SIT, set up on 27 July and headed by IGP Kiran S, must file a status report in a sealed cover detailing progress. The court also directed the SIT to consider litigants’ suggestions on improving investigation quality and transparency, and to include a forensic auditor as per a prior request to the Uttar Pradesh government. Earlier court directions had asked the Uttar Pradesh police to submit a status report on 13 July and issued a notice to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust over the possibility of a fair, time‑bound probe. Following petitions from RJD MP Sudhakar Singh and others, the court may issue reforms in donation management after reviewing the SIT’s report.

Why it matters

The ruling could compel the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust to overhaul its donation handling, directly affecting devotees who contribute to the temple and potentially tightening oversight and accountability.
