Supreme Court Orders Removal of Unwarranted Delhi Barricades
· India · India Today, Hindustan Times
The Supreme Court has directed Delhi authorities to review and remove barricades across the capital unless they are necessary for law-and-order or traffic management. A bench of Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana ruled that metro and railway services must operate normally during protests. The court emphasized that while the right to protest is protected, it must be exercised within the bounds of the Police Act. Authorities were also ordered to remove restrictions around the Supreme Court premises to ensure unhindered access to justice. The directions follow petitions challenging the closure of 45 metro stations and the detention of protesters during recent demonstrations.
Why it matters
The ruling ensures that public movement and essential services in Delhi remain accessible during protests, balancing the right to assemble with the necessity of maintaining urban infrastructure.
