Supreme Court Questions FSSAI Over Timeline for Food Labelling

The Supreme Court on Monday questioned the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India over its proposed timeline for implementing front-of-package nutritional labelling on packaged foods. A bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and K Vinod Chandran asked why the authority intends to spend a year on voluntary compliance and a fresh round of consultations when citizen health is at stake. The FSSAI defended its timeline by stating that its previous 2022 initiative focused on a different Indian Nutrition Rating star system. The food regulator has now proposed a red hexagonal warning label against a white background for food products high in sugar, fat, and salt. FSSAI informed the top court that finalising the draft regulations, inviting stakeholder comments via domestic consultation and the WTO platform, and implementing a 365-day voluntary period will require approximately four months and subsequent notification.
