Supreme Court Questions NHAI Over CCTV Surveillance at Toll Plazas
· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu
The Supreme Court has asked the National Highways Authority of India why it cannot install camera surveillance systems and monitoring rooms at all toll plazas to curb highway accidents. The bench, led by Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, flagged illegal parking and encroachment as major safety hazards on national highways. This intervention follows a suo motu case regarding a November 2025 accident in Rajasthan's Phalodi, where 15 people died after a vehicle hit a stationary trailer. The court has granted two weeks to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the Ministry of Home Affairs to file compliance affidavits regarding these safety issues.
Why it matters
The court's directive aims to reduce fatal accidents caused by unauthorized parking and stationary vehicles on national highways, directly impacting road safety for millions of commuters.
