Supreme Court Questions Officials Over Peaceful Protests and Detentions in New Delhi

· India · Times of India, ABC News (AU)

The Supreme Court on Sunday sought responses from Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar, and Delhi Metro Rail chief D Thara regarding a contempt petition. Petitioners alleged authorities violated an October 9 order prohibiting complete shutdowns of metro and train services in New Delhi. The court also ordered the normalization of internet connectivity and prohibited illegal detentions of peaceful protesters. On the ground, nearly 700 people were detained in New Delhi during demonstrations demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. A bench of Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana instructed the officials to file their responses by October 13.

Why it matters

The Supreme Court's intervention directly challenges executive clampdowns on public demonstrations and transit shutdowns in New Delhi, setting a critical precedent for civil liberties.
