Supreme Court Refuses To Interfere With Chitra Ramakrishna Prosecution Sanction

· India · Hindustan Times, Times of India, Bloomberg

The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to interfere with the prosecution sanction granted against former National Stock Exchange managing director and CEO Chitra Ramakrishna under the Prevention of Corruption Act. A bench of justices JB Pardiwala and K Vinod Chandran dismissed Ramakrishna's challenge to a Delhi High Court order while permitting her to raise the question of whether she performed a public duty before the trial court. The Delhi High Court had previously ruled that the NSE performs a vital public role in the financial markets, meaning its chief executive cannot be completely separated from those functions. The Central Bureau of Investigation alleges that Ramakrishna facilitated a system between 2010 and 2014 that gave certain brokers preferential server access and involved irregularities in executive appointments.

Why it matters

The ruling clears the legal path for corruption proceedings to continue against former exchange leadership, setting a key precedent for accountability in India's financial regulatory framework.
