Supreme Court Seeks Centre Reply on Kerala Waqf Board Deadline Extension Plea

The Supreme Court sought the response of the Central government to a plea filed by the Kerala Waqf Board seeking a four-month extension to upload details of 25,000 Waqf properties onto a centralised portal. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant remarked that the board was taking the matter leisurely, citing the statutory six-month deadline under Section 3-B of the UMEED Act, 2025. Senior advocate V Chitambaresh, representing the board, stated that Kerala has approximately 13,000 Waqf institutions and over 60,000 Waqf properties. He explained that persistent technical glitches and the need for detailed statutory scrutiny delayed the process, even though more than 40,000 properties have already been verified. The Kerala High Court had previously granted only a one-month extension after the statutory deadline expired on May 17, 2026. The Supreme Court scheduled the next hearing for September 7.
