Supreme Court Seeks FSSAI Clarification on Packaged Food Warning Labels

The Supreme Court has directed the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to provide further clarifications regarding the proposed front-of-package labelling (FoPL) for packaged food items. The court is reviewing a plea from the '3S and Our Health Society' that calls for mandatory warning labels to identify high levels of salt, sugar, and saturated fat. During the hearing, the bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and K Vinod Chandran questioned the FSSAI on the specific timeline for its two-phased implementation plan. The court also requested the Centre to outline how schools will incorporate nutritional literacy into their curricula to help children interpret these food labels. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on September 28.
