Supreme Court Seeks State Replies on Seizing Paper‑Leak Accused’ Property

A bench of Justices PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe in New Delhi issued notice to the Union of India and all state governments for a PIL that seeks confiscation of movable and immovable property of those accused of leaking examination papers. Advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay filed the plea, also asking that property of the accused’s family members be seized and that investigations and trials be time‑bound under the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026. The petition further demanded that sentences in paper‑leak cases run consecutively and invited the Law Commission to study international practices within three months. The Supreme Court set the next hearing for September 25 and asked the Centre and states to respond by the prescribed deadline. The court’s move follows repeated failures to curb question‑paper leaks, which the petitioners say violate students’ fundamental rights and cause mental and financial harm.
