Supreme Court Sets October 8 Deadline for West Bengal Speaker on TMC Rebel Pleas

The Supreme Court on Monday directed West Bengal assembly speaker Rathindra Nath Bose to decide on disqualification petitions against 10 rebel legislators by October 8. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant cited a 2020 Supreme Court decision requiring speakers to rule on such matters within three months. The disqualification pleas were filed on July 8 by TMC leader Sohandeb Chattopadhyay against rebel faction leader Ritabrata Banerjee and nine other MLAs. The bench declined a request from senior advocate Kapil Sibal to keep the matter pending, noting that the 2020 verdict already addressed the relief sought. The other rebel legislators named in the petitions include Arup Roy, Firhad Hakim, Sandipan Saha, Akhuruzzaman Ansari, Shiuli Saha, Sabina Yasmin, Biplab Mitra, Javed Khan, and Rathin Ghosh.
