Supreme Court Settles Decades-Old Energy Dispute, Awarding Himachal Pradesh Power Dues
· India · The Hindu, Times of India
The Supreme Court resolved a decades-long energy dispute by ruling that Punjab and Haryana must supply 11,973 million units of electricity to Himachal Pradesh over a period of 20 years. A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana accepted the Centre's cashless proposal to settle power arrears stemming from Bhakra Nangal and Beas hydro projects dating back to 1966. The settlement follows a 2011 apex court verdict that fixed Himachal Pradesh's share at 7.19%, while Punjab's share was set at 51.80% and Haryana's share at 37.51%. The agreement includes an adjustment of ₹420 crore for historical capital construction costs, exempting Himachal Pradesh from making cash payments to Punjab and Haryana. The original entitlement calculated by the Central Electricity Authority stood at 13,066 million units.
