Supreme Court Stays Execution of Indian Mujahideen Operative in 2008 Ahmedabad Blasts Case

· India · The Hindu, Times of India

The Supreme Court on Thursday stayed the execution of the death penalty awarded to Indian Mujahideen operative Ahmed Bawa alias Abbu Abubakar Barelvi. A Bench of Justices Vikram Nath, A. G. Masih, and Sandeep Mehta issued notice to the Gujarat government on Barelvi's plea and called for trial court records. The Gujarat High Court had earlier on July 7 upheld the death sentence of 38 operatives, including Barelvi, citing massive casualties and a humongous conspiracy. The 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts involved 21 explosions over 70 minutes on July 26, 2008, killing 56 people and injuring over 200 others. The attack included blasts at hospitals, marking the first time medical facilities were targeted in an Indian terror strike.

Why it matters

The ruling halts capital punishment for a key convict in one of India's deadliest terror attacks, pending further Supreme Court review of the Gujarat High Court verdict.
