Supreme Court Threatens to Ground Non-Compliant Airlines as Centre Fast-Tracks New Aviation Rules

The Supreme Court warned that airlines failing to comply with regulatory standards should be grounded during a hearing in New Delhi. A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta addressed a petition filed by social activist S Laxminarayanan, which sought an independent regulator to manage passenger protection and transparency across the civil aviation sector. Meanwhile, the Union government informed the bench that it has fast-tracked the framing of new aviation rules under the Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam, 2024, aiming to finalise them within three weeks. The plea had earlier highlighted the unchecked increase in airfares and the reduction of free check-in baggage allowance for economy passengers from 25 kg to 15 kg without justification. The petition noted that no current authority possesses the power to review or cap airfares or ancillary fees, allowing airlines to impose hidden charges.
