The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to try and list a petition filed by former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee against the Election Commission's decision to freeze the Trinamool Congress party symbol. Appearing for Ms. Banerjee, senior advocate Kapil Sibal argued before a three-judge Bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant that the interim freeze order was unwarranted while proceedings under the Election Symbols Order 1968 remain active. The top poll body had on September 17 allotted new names and symbols to two factions of the party, granting the Mamata faction the name 'Mamata All India Trinamool Congress' with a football player symbol and the rival Ritabrata Banerjee grouping the name 'Democratic Trinamool Congress' with an envelope symbol.
