· India · Times of India, Indian Express, Zee News
The Supreme Court on Friday criticized plans to completely suspend metro and train services ahead of a planned protest in New Delhi. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant stated that total shutdowns affect thousands of commuters, including students and employees travelling from Gurugram and Noida. The bench emphasized that transport services must operate in a regulated manner to minimize public inconvenience. The observations came as senior advocates moved the court against the cancellation of trains and closure of metro station entry gates ahead of a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The court noted that organizers must challenge the police denial of permission for the demonstration if they seek relief on restrictions.
Why it matters
The Supreme Court's intervention protects daily commuters and workers in the Delhi-NCR region from severe transit disruptions caused by security clampdowns.
