Suresh Raina Hints At Mohammed Shami's Potential Return To India Squad
· Sports · Times of India, NDTV Sports, Indian Express
Former India cricketer Suresh Raina believes fast bowler Mohammed Shami could soon make a return to the national team following Bhuvneshwar Kumar's recall at the age of 36. Raina praised Bhuvneshwar's discipline and fitness during the jersey launch of the Indian Soft Ball Cricket League, pointing to his strong domestic performances and success in the IPL. Shami last featured for India during the 2025 Champions Trophy, while his most recent Test appearance came in the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia. The fast bowler is set to represent Bengal in their opening fixture of the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season to push for a national comeback. However, Shami's recent IPL numbers show he has managed just 18 wickets in 22 matches across the 2025 and 2026 seasons with an economy rate of 10 per over.
Why it matters
Shami's performance in the upcoming domestic season will be critical for selectors evaluating India's pace bowling depth ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
