Survey Finds Many Chemists Sell Prescription Drugs Without Valid Prescriptions

· India · The Hindu, LiveMint

A nationwide survey by LocalCircles found that 64% of consumers reported their local chemists rarely or never requested a doctor’s prescription for medicine purchases over the past 12 months. Only 15% of respondents indicated that their chemist consistently refused to sell prescription drugs without valid documentation. The findings, which included 1.06 lakh responses across 327 districts, come as the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare proposes mandatory CCTV surveillance for all medical stores dispensing prescription drugs. Officials in Hyderabad, Telangana, are currently conducting enforcement drives to address illegal sales and the operation of stores without registered pharmacists.

Why it matters

The lack of prescription enforcement poses significant public health risks, prompting the government to consider stricter surveillance measures to ensure accountability at the point of sale.
