· India · Hindustan Times, LiveMint

The Ministry of Home Affairs, in consultation with the Ladakh administration, has formally identified 28 places and geographical features in the Union territory through standard names on the official Survey of India map. The updated mapping includes prominent peaks such as Atisha Giri, Kanishka Peak, Martand Giri, and Zorawar Peak, alongside various mountains, passes, glaciers, valleys, rivers, and lakes. Specifically, Guru Rinpoche has been designated as a lake, Yangpa as a river, and Hot Spring as a water body. Officials stated that the exercise aims to ensure accurate recognition, improve public awareness, and establish a standard reference for nomenclature across public and official references. The updated mapping exercise is part of ongoing efforts to standardise geographical information across the region.

Why it matters
