Suspect in FlyDubai Cockpit Attack Identified as Security Risk
· World · ABC News, Indian Express
The co-pilot who allegedly attacked the captain and attempted to crash a FlyDubai flight bound for Israel has been identified as 29-year-old Omani national Hamam Al Hammami. Intelligence officials revealed that Al Hammami was previously suspended from flying by Oman Air in 2024 after being found in possession of extremist materials, though he was later retained in an administrative role. Investigators are currently probing how he was subsequently permitted to fly for FlyDubai and placed in the cockpit. Al Hammami was transferred from Saudi Arabia to the United Arab Emirates, where authorities stated he is cooperating with the investigation. The flight ultimately landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, after passengers and a third pilot subdued the attacker.
Why it matters
The security breach raises critical questions about aviation screening protocols and how individuals flagged for extremist ties are permitted to pilot commercial aircraft.
