Suspected Israeli Intelligence Recruitment Online Targets Iran and Lebanon
· World · Al Jazeera, NBC News
Israeli intelligence services are using social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp to gather information and recruit informants in Lebanon and Iran. A verified Instagram account operating under the handle @themossad_official has posted recruitment appeals in colloquial Lebanese Arabic, encouraging confidential contact through private messages. Security agencies in Lebanon, including the General Security Directorate, have repeatedly warned residents against interacting with these accounts and fake job advertisements offering high salaries. These recruitment efforts have specifically targeted areas with significant Hezbollah presence, such as Beirut's southern suburbs, southern Lebanon, and the Bekaa Valley. The concerns have coincided with the arrests of individuals accused of passing sensitive information to Israel.
Why it matters
The digital recruitment campaign exposes vulnerabilities among residents facing severe economic hardship in Lebanon and heightens security paranoia in Iran amid ongoing regional conflict.
