West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday joined a public Vande Mataram recital near the Jadavpur University campus in Kolkata, where he criticised a section of students for raising Azadi (freedom) slogans. He asked, "What freedom do you want?" and accused them of aligning with the "tukde-tukde gang," also referencing Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir and Operation Sindoor. Adhikari's visit comes 10 days after ABVP and Left students' unions clashed on the Jadavpur campus on August 19; the university has set up an inquiry committee and multiple FIRs have been registered. A nearly 1-km-long ramp was erected for the programme, traffic on Raja Subodh Chandra Mallick Road was suspended from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., and four university gates were closed. Issuing a stern warning, Adhikari said, "Either they will stay, or we will. There will be nothing in between," and claimed he had cleared Nandigram and Jangalmahal of Left and Maoist influence.
