Taliban Expands Global Trade and Security Ties Without Formal Recognition

The Taliban government in Afghanistan has expanded its international ties in security, trade, energy, and transport five years after returning to power. While Russia became the first country to officially recognise the administration in July 2025, most of the international community continues to withhold full political recognition. Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi stated that Kabul currently deals with more than 40 diplomatic missions and foreign organisations. China has emerged as a prominent partner, cooperating closely on security and investment, including the Logar copper mine project. Meanwhile, relations with neighbouring Pakistan have deteriorated over security disputes involving the TTP, prompting Kabul to diversify its trade routes through Iran and Central Asian nations like Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.
