· Business · The Hindu, Indian Express, Hindustan Times

The Tamil Nadu government has announced an additional incentive of ₹22,000 for domestic consumers installing solar rooftop systems. Under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yogna, beneficiaries already receive a maximum subsidy of ₹78,000 for capacities above 3kW, bringing the total financial benefit to ₹1 lakh. The announcement was made during the recent Tamil Nadu Budget session. Renewable energy promoters have welcomed the move while awaiting clear operational modalities. P. Ashok Kumar, founder-president of the Tamil Nadu Solar Energy Developers Association, has urged the State Government to direct part of the incentive toward energy storage devices such as batteries and inverters to improve grid stability and reduce peak-hour power purchase costs.

Why it matters

Domestic consumers in Tamil Nadu receive enhanced financial support to adopt solar power, while the state electricity board faces potential reductions in peak-hour power purchase costs if energy storage is integrated.
