Tamil Nadu Announces Elderly Insurance and Public Health Reforms

Tamil Nadu Health Minister K G Arunraj announced 115 public health initiatives for 2026-2027 in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, featuring elderly insurance and a medicity project. The state plans to enact a new Tamil Nadu Public Health Act to replace the 1939 law, which will make home births outside hospitals a punishable offense. A Positive Health Policy alongside the Nalam 360 mobile app will provide free annual health check-ups covering 14 basic tests for citizens aged 30 and above. Additionally, a ₹26.87 crore Integrated Mental Health Plan will establish mental health units and rehabilitation centers across 12 districts, while the Chief Minister's Elderly Insurance Scheme will provide free treatment to 38 lakh senior citizens over 70 without an income ceiling.
