Tamil Nadu Assembly Seeks TET Exemption for Senior Teachers

· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times, Indian Express

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution on August 25, 2026, seeking to exempt teachers appointed before August 23, 2010, from the Teachers Eligibility Test. School Education Minister Rajmohan moved the resolution, which urges the Union government to amend Section 23 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009. The move aims to protect over 3.28 lakh teachers who face potential service termination or promotion hurdles following a recent Supreme Court order. The state government is requesting the National Council for Teacher Education to issue a formal notification to formalise this exemption.

Why it matters

This resolution seeks to provide job security to over 3 lakh long-serving teachers in Tamil Nadu who would otherwise be required to pass a test to maintain their employment.
