Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay announced a new package of welfare schemes in the Assembly on Monday, including three free LPG cylinders annually for families earning below Rs 2.5 lakh. Named 'Annapoorani Super Six', the scheme will roll out from Pongal 2027, covering approximately 1.30 crore families at an estimated annual cost of Rs 4,000 crore, with funds directly credited to user accounts. Vijay also announced free bus travel for transgender persons and expanded the existing Vettri Payana Thittam scheme to allow women free travel on Express, LSS, Deluxe, and inter-district buses starting October 2. Additionally, the Chief Minister reiterated the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam party's opposition to the proposed Parandur airport due to displacement concerns for residents and farmers, noting that alternative locations are being examined alongside plans for a new Terminal 5 at Chennai airport in Meenambakkam.
