Tamil Nadu fixes ₹50 minimum fare for autorickshaws in Chennai and other regions

· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times, LiveMint

The Tamil Nadu government has fixed the minimum autorickshaw fare at ₹50 for trips up to 1.8 km in the Chennai Metropolitan Area and other regions, according to a gazette notification. For travel beyond 1.8 km, an additional charge of ₹25 per kilometre applies, with waiting charges set at ₹1 per minute. Night travel between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. incurs a 1.5 times regular fare, while ghat road travel attracts a base fare of ₹60 and ₹30 per kilometre. The revision, issued under Section 67 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, directs the State Transport Authority and Regional Transport Authorities to implement the new structure across the State.

Why it matters

Commuters in Chennai and across Tamil Nadu will face revised auto-fare calculations, with higher costs for longer trips, night travel, and ghat road routes, directly affecting daily wage earners and inter-city travelers.
