Tamil Nadu To Explore Alternative Sites For Chennai Second Airport
· India · The Hindu, Deccan Herald
The Tamil Nadu government has decided to explore alternative sites for Chennai's second airport while remaining committed to the Hosur project. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay recently held a review meeting regarding the Chennai airport project at the Secretariat in Chennai. The ruling TVK had opposed land acquisition for the Parandur airport prior to the election, during which the previous DMK government led by M.K. Stalin had acquired 1,700 acres and obtained site clearance. State officials are also considering the expansion of the Meenambakkam airport alongside alternative locations in Chengalpet district. For the Hosur project, the state requires Defense Ministry approval to relax airspace restrictions.
Why it matters
The shift in site selection creates uncertainty for landowners and regional infrastructure development in Tamil Nadu, while delaying a definitive solution for Chennai's growing aviation capacity.
