Tamil Nadu to Offer ₹10 Lakh to Families of Three Tamils Killed in Karnataka Forest

The Tamil Nadu Forest Minister R.V. Ranjithkumar announced that the state will give ₹10 lakh to each family of the three Tamils killed by Karnataka Forest Department officials on 14 August in the Mariamangalam forest near Karadikutta. The proposal follows protests by the families and a 5 lakh offer from Karnataka after a road roko by 300 residents. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay directed the compensation, and a magisterial inquiry has been ordered to determine who fired first and who is responsible. The deceased, P. Anthonysamy, John Rose Peter and Kumar, were Tamil migrants who had settled in Karnataka 75 years earlier, while the injured Mariadoss and Benjamin are recovering in a private hospital. A police case has been filed against the Karnataka Forest Department personnel involved.
