Tamil Nadu to Rejuvenate Irrigation Channels and Ponds

The Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department of Tamil Nadu will begin the rejuvenation of 10,185 irrigation channels and 809 ponds across 37 districts on Monday, August 17, 2026. The project, operating under the Viksit Bharat – Gramin Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission scheme, aims to enhance rainwater storage capacity and improve agricultural irrigation ahead of the northeast monsoon. Officials stated that the desilting process will also serve as a flood control measure during periods of heavy rainfall. The initiative, estimated to cost ₹507.92 crore, will be inaugurated by Minister for Rural Development and Water Resources N. Anand.

The project is expected to boost groundwater levels and provide critical irrigation support to farmers, while simultaneously mitigating flood risks for rural communities in Tamil Nadu.
