Tamil Nadu to Spend ₹500 Crore Annually on Road Safety Mission

On August 19, 2026, Tamil Nadu Minister for Public Works and Sports Development Aadhav Arjuna announced the launch of the Chief Minister’s Road Safety Mission with an annual budget of ₹500 crore to be deployed over six to eight months. The plan will install Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras on all State and National Highways to read vehicle speed and registration, mirroring Kerala’s system that has reportedly reduced fatal accidents. Tamil Nadu has been identified as the state with the highest number of road accidents in India, which prompted the initiative. In addition, the Corridor Accident Response and Emergency programme will upgrade 25 government hospitals and primary health centres into emergency response centres, linking them with selected accident‑prone locations. A new land acquisition wing under the Highways Department will be created to accelerate land procurement for road safety projects.
