Tamil Nadu TVK Govt Replaces Centre-State Panel With New Law Commission
· India · India Today, Hindustan Times
Tamil Nadu Law Minister Nirmal Kumar said the previous government's panel on Centre-State relations was disbanded because its tenure expired and one of its three members resigned on May 4, 2026. The TVK government led by Chief Minister Vijay reconstituted the State Law Commission on August 7, 2026, via Government Order No. 202. Former Manipur High Court Chief Justice D Krishnakumar was appointed chairman for a three-year term. The commission includes four full-time members — former Madras High Court judge RMT Teekaa Raman, former Additional Chief Secretary T K Ramachandran, former Law Department Secretary A Arunagiri — and two part-time members, former district judges P Mohan Doss and R Govindarajan. Kumar also alleged that DMK chief MK Stalin raised questions about the panel to divert attention from the "Periyar Library Scam".
Why it matters
The new commission will examine Union-State relations and legal, judicial, and administrative reforms, shaping Tamil Nadu's stance on federal issues. The move signals the TVK government's intent to reset the state's legal architecture and frame Centre-State dynamics on its own terms.
