Tarun Tejpal moves SC against Bombay HC conviction, 10-year jail term

Tarun Tejpal has filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the August 6 Bombay High Court order that convicted him in a 2013 sexual assault case. The court sentenced the 62-year-old former Tehelka editor to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a junior colleague inside a hotel elevator in Goa. The High Court ruling had previously overturned a trial court's acquittal of the accused. Separately, the Goa government has also approached the Supreme Court to seek a life sentence, contending that the current 10-year term is insufficient given the severity of the offense. Tejpal has consistently maintained that he was a victim of political targeting.
Why it matters
The Supreme Court's final verdict will determine whether the 10-year sentence stands, is reduced, or is increased to a life term as requested by the Goa government.
