Tata Sons IPO Could Unlock Value for Group Holding Companies

· Business · Times of India, Economic Times

Nine Tata-group companies are currently holding a combined 12.8% stake in Tata Sons, which could gain significant liquidity if the parent entity lists under upper investment company rules. These holdings, led by Tata Motors and Tata Steel, were acquired through a 1995-96 rights issue and have much been viewed as dead capital for decades. While the market currently values Tata Sons at ₹14 lakh crore, some analysts suggest the value of Tata Chemicals' stake alone nears the company's total market cap. A public listing would provide an exit for over 1.2 crore retail shareholders across the group subsidiaries and address long-standing concerns regarding capital efficiency.

Why it matters

A listing of Tata Sons would transform the valuation structure of India's largest conglomerate and provide a major boost to millions of retail investors holding shares in its subsidiaries.
