TDP sweeps 15 of 17 municipal chairperson posts unopposed in Andhra Pradesh
· India · The Hindu, NDTV
Seventeen candidates were declared unanimously elected as chairpersons of municipalities and nagar panchayats across Andhra Pradesh early on Monday by the State Election Commission. The Telugu Desam Party won 15 of the uncontested seats, while its allies Jana Sena Party and Bharatiya Janata Party secured one each in Darsi and Yerraguntla respectively. The TDP victors include Shaik Babavali in Piduguralla, Nelavelli Bollaiah in Gurajala and Tangella Srinivasa Rao in Dachepalli among others spread across the state. Daram Subba Rao was elected for Jana Sena in Darsi and Gorla Madhu Latha for BJP in Yerraguntla. The elections were held without a contest after opposition parties did not field candidates against the ruling alliance nominees.
Why it matters
The clean sweep consolidates the TDP-led alliance's grip on local governance ahead of the next general elections and extends its administrative reach across key municipal bodies.
