Teens Rarely Use Instagram's Anti-Addiction Tools Despite Meta's Efforts
· Technology · Android Authority, The Hindu
Internal Meta data reveals that between 0.165% and 0.2% of teen users actively engaged with Instagram's Take a Break feature when it was an opt-in tool. The feature was designed to prompt users to step away from the platform after extended periods of interaction. While Meta previously claimed that 90% of teens who activated the tool kept it enabled, the company's internal figures indicated a significantly lower adoption rate among the broader teen user base. Meta is currently facing a lawsuit from 29 US states regarding safety and privacy concerns for younger users. To address these issues, the company has now made Take a Break a default setting for all teen accounts.
Why it matters
The low adoption rates raise questions about the effectiveness of self-regulation tools in curbing addictive social media behavior among adolescents. The findings are central to ongoing legal challenges regarding Meta's responsibility for the mental health and safety of its youngest users.
