Telangana High Court Grants Anticipatory Bail to Advocates in Rape and Suicide Abetment Case
· India · Indian Express, Times of India, The Hindu
The Telangana High Court has granted anticipatory bail to two advocates facing allegations of rape under a false promise of marriage and abetment of suicide. Justice N Tukaramji ruled that mere abuse, humiliation, or unpleasant words do not constitute abetment of suicide without intentional instigation or proximate nexus. The prosecution had alleged that the main accused maintained a two-year relationship with a junior advocate under the guise of marriage before harassing her, leading to her suicide attempts in May and July 2023. The court directed the petitioners not to threaten witnesses, influence individuals, or tamper with evidence during the ongoing investigation.
Why it matters
The ruling sets a clear legal threshold for what constitutes abetment of suicide in criminal proceedings, protecting individuals from custodial interrogation where direct intentional instigation is absent.
