Telangana High Court Rules Colleges Cannot Withhold Student Certificates

· India · Indian Express, Hindustan Times

The Telangana High Court has ordered a college to immediately return the original educational certificates of three BTech graduates, ruling that institutions have no authority to retain them over unpaid tuition fees. Justice Juvvadi Sridevi stated that academic credentials are the personal property of students and cannot be held as leverage for fee recovery. The petitioners, who graduated in 2025, had faced difficulties pursuing higher studies after the college withheld their documents despite claims of pending government reimbursements. The court observed that such retention is wholly unjustified and has caused the students to lose an academic year.

Why it matters

This ruling protects students from coercive fee-recovery tactics by private colleges, ensuring they can pursue higher education without their documents being held hostage.
