Telangana’s Deputy Chief Minister M. Bhatti Vikramarka highlighted the state’s proactive measures to tackle El Niño, which has caused deficient rainfall, reduced reservoir inflows, and increased electricity demand. The state recorded a 12% rainfall deficit in June, 1% in July, and a significant 38% in August, with total rainfall at 543 mm against the normal 640 mm. Kharif cultivation area shrank to 123.74 lakh acres from 139.29 lakh acres last year, with paddy cultivation declining by 18%. Power demand surged, peaking at 19,453 MW on September 9, while hydropower generation dropped to 422 MW from 1,940 MW last year. The government began precautionary measures in April, coordinating across departments to address the crisis.
