Telangana Urges Farmers to Avoid Water-Intensive Crops Amid El Nino Crisis
· India · The Hindu, NDTV
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has urged farmers to avoid water-intensive crops like paddy and opt for irrigated dry crops to prevent severe losses from looming El Nino water shortages. The State government estimates that crops over 13 lakh acres could be affected due to deficit rainfall during the monsoon season. Reservoirs across the state currently hold 209 tmcft of water, compared to over 450 tmcft during the same period last year. Energy consumption hit a record 20,003 MW on Thursday as farmers operated 33 lakh pumpsets, putting immense pressure on power generation. The Chief Minister noted that neighbouring Andhra Pradesh is also facing severe power deficits as electricity remains unavailable in power exchanges.
Why it matters
Farmers across Telangana face severe crop losses and water scarcity, while the state grapples with record energy demand and power shortages driven by the El Nino weather pattern.
