· India · Hindustan Times, Al Jazeera
Tension prevailed in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain on Monday morning after a physical altercation erupted between protestors and police personnel during the demolition of a portion of the Shahi Masjid for a road-widening project. Police registered an FIR against ten individuals, including five social media influencers accused of spreading misinformation and disturbing the peace, following stone pelting that injured half a dozen policemen. Authorities deployed around 2,500 police personnel, including forces from neighbouring districts, and used tear gas shells and a cane charge to control the crowd. Women from the Muslim community later staged a large protest at the site demanding an immediate halt to the demolition. The district administration stated that a small portion of the century-old mosque falls within the alignment for road widening ahead of Simhastha, while a hearing is scheduled at the Indore Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
