Tent and Bags Found but No Trace of 8 Missing Trekkers in Uttarakhand

· India · Indian Express, Hindustan Times

Rescue teams found a tent and bags near Kedarkadak in Uttarakhand on Monday but did not locate any of the eight missing trekkers, Uttarakhand SDRF Commandant Arpan Yaduvanshi confirmed. The search operation, conducted jointly by SDRF and Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, covered high-altitude terrain near Kedartal despite difficult weather and avalanche-hit conditions. Four party members — three porters and a cook — were rescued on October 31 near Kachchi Dhang after being trapped by heavy snowfall and avalanches. The eight missing persons include five trekkers from West Bengal, two women from Uttar Pradesh and a 25-year-old local guide from Uttarkashi, with the group expected to return by October 29 after setting out from Gangotri on October 27.

Why it matters

The eight missing trekkers, including vulnerable individuals from West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, remain in life-threatening conditions due to extreme weather and avalanche terrain, with rescue efforts continuing in a high-risk zone where timely action is critical for their survival.
