Tesla Cybercab Faces NHTSA Probe Following Austin Launch

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into Tesla following the deployment of its new Cybercab vehicles on streets in Austin, Texas. The Cybercab lacks traditional manual controls like brake pedals, which are currently required by federal safety regulations. While Tesla self-certified the vehicles, the federal agency is now reviewing the safety compliance of the autonomous fleet. There are currently 45 registered Cybercabs in Texas, though the company has yet to achieve the scale of competitors like Waymo.
